Board Meeting Highlights January 24, 2017

Thoughtexchange Engagement – Program Review
The Board of Trustees asked the parents, staff and community members from the CB McMurdo School and the French Immersion community from École Parkdale and École Queen Elizabeth to participate in a program review survey on the Year Round Education and French Immersion Programs.   

From the hundreds of thoughts shared and prioritized, the Board was able learn about what is valued most about these two programs, what changes they could consider to ensure the programs continue to improve and how they could support and grow both the French Immersion and Year Round programs.

The Board reviewed the results of the third stage of this recent thoughtexchange engagement process, called “Discovery”.  The release of an executive summary and detailed web page with major themes from the feedback and starring process have now been shared with parents staff and community members.  The Board would like to sincerely thank all those who participated in this engagement.  Click here to learn, about the top priorities for each program.

Leaders of Tomorrow
The Leaders of Tomorrow Kick Off was held on January 19, 2017 at the Reynolds Alberta Museum.  Leaders of Tomorrow are now accepting nominations for this youth volunteer recognition award. The Leaders of Tomorrow Award is a youth volunteer recognition program which enables community organizations to publicly recognize the contributions of their youth volunteers. For more information or to print the nomination form visit the Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools website at:  http://www.wrps.ab.ca/parents/leaders-of-tomorrow.   The awards event will be held at the Reynolds Alberta Museum on April 24, 2017.

2017-2018 Transportation Fees
Commencing in August 2017 there will be a reduction in the transportation fees for school of choice and ineligible riders.  The fee will be reduced from its current rate of $600 for one student to $400 and from $1200 to $800 for two or more students in one family.  The ECS fee will also be reduced from $300 to $200. 

The Board considered the current economic situation which was factor in reaching this decision.  Additionally the transportation fees are now the same as the transportation fees being charged by the St. Thomas Aquinas School Division.

Modular Classrooms for Griffiths-Scott School
Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools has been approved for four (4) modular classrooms for the Griffiths-Scott School.  Approval of this request was based on our identification of an emergent need for student accommodation in Millet due to the closure of the Millet School.  We will receive two fully funded modular classrooms, and the ministry will pay 100 per cent of the reasonable cost to deliver and set up each classroom the other two additional classrooms will be funded by Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools.  The projected opening of these new classrooms is for the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

Open House – Success at Wetaskiwin Composite High School
The Board hosted two open house events for parents and students who would be entering the Wetaskiwin Composite High School Grade 9 program that will commence in September of 2017.  Audrey Looker, Principal presented information and answered questions on how the program will co-exist in the newly renovated facility.  Endless opportunities in option courses were presented and will be made available to Grade 9 students based on student popularity.  The open house events were held on January 9 & 17 and were well attended by many parents and students.  The evening ended with a guided tour of the facility.
