Board Meeting Highlights March 14, 2017

2018-2021 Capital Plan
The Board approved the 2018-2021 Capital Plan, which includes moving Parkdale School as the Board's number one priority for a total facility modernization, and upgrades on Buck Mountain central. Architects are preparing a project scope report on Parkdale School for submission to Alberta Infrastructure which addresses mechanical, structural, electrical, bathroom/change room upgrades, and administration suite relocation. With regard to Buck Mountain Central, an architectural firm will provide a report on this school similar to that which will be provided on Parkdale School.

2017-2018 Mileage
Administration surveyed surrounding jurisdictions to compare their mileage rates to that which is offered by WRPS.  To remain at the average of surrounding jurisdictions, the Board moved to set the 2017-2018 mileage rate at $0.53/km. 

Elimination of Basic Educational Services Fees for 2017-2018
On March 2, 2017, the Alberta government announced proposed changes to Bill 1 that would result in the elimination of Basic Educational Services fees in all schools.  In anticipation of this, the Board moved to eliminate the Basic Educational Services fees for 2017-2018 contingent on the proclamation of Bill 1 and to keep the Careers & Technology Foundations and Band Equipment Rental fees at the same rates charged in 2016-2017.

Facilities Update
Griffiths Scott Middle School’s Modular Additions - The development permit has been approved by the Town of Millet. Architectural drawings are approaching 90% completion. It is anticipated that the modular addition project will take 6 weeks to complete and should be ready for teachers to move into their classrooms by August 15, 2017.

École Queen Elizabeth School’s ECS Classroom - Architectural drawings are almost complete. Once WRPS reviews and approves them, contractors will be invited to submit their tender bids by May 15, 2017. The tender closing date will be June 1, 2017. It is anticipated that the project will be complete by August 15, 2017. 

Centennial School’s Smudging Room & Locker Additions - Architectural drawings are almost complete. Once WRPS reviews and approves them, contractors will be invited to submit their tender bids by May 15, 2017. The tender closing date will be June 1, 2017. It is anticipated that the project will be complete by August 15, 2017. WRPS maintenance staff is working with Centennial School administration to determine the number and location of additional lockers required within Centennial School. Installation is scheduled for the week of March 27, 2017.

Wetaskiwin Composite High School’s Locker Additions - Site administration indicated they require 120 additional lockers to accommodate the anticipated increase in the student population for 2017-2018. WRPS maintenance staff is working with site administration to determine the colours and locations of the lockers. Installation is tentatively scheduled for July/August 2017.
